Relationships: Taking Care of Yourself in the Moment

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. Maria consulted with me because she was frustrated about the distance she felt in her relationship with her husband, Carl. He wanted to be close to her, but she didnt feel close to him. I think the problem is that he often talks to me in a judgmental or condescending way. He sounds like a parent rather than a partner. I just hate being spoken to like that. How do you respond when he speaks to you like that? I asked. I withdraw and feel badly. Then later I sometimes try to talk with him about it, but he doesnt know what Im talking about. He thinks Im too sensitive and that I just want to blame him. How often have you had the experience of not knowing what to say in conflict? Later, after thinking about it, you think of all the things you wish you would have said. Then you go back to your partner to try to deal with the issue, only to discover that its too late - your partner doesnt understand what you are talking about. Maria, imagine that the part of you that hates being spoken to like Carl speaks to you is a small child. Would you let him speak to a child like that? No. Actually, I dont let him speak to our children like that. He speaks to them with kindness and caring because he knows that I will say something if he is mean to them. So you stand up for your children in the moment, but you dont stand up for yourself, for the child within you, in the moment? Yeah. I just never know what to say. What do you say to him later? I tell him I didnt like his tone of voice. But he isnt aware of it. Right. He will be aware of it only if you say it in the moment. Most people are not aware of their tone of voice. When you tell him about it later, he really doesnt know what you are talking about. You need to be responding in the moment for him to hear his own voice. You need to be saying something like, Carl, I hate it when you speak to me in that judgmental, parental voice. I dont feel like being with you when you talk to me like that. You have a much better chance of him understanding what you are saying when he can hear his own voice in the moment. And you will feel much better when you speak up for yourself in the moment. You will not feel so much like withdrawing when you are not abandoning yourself in the face of his judgmental tone. While Maria certainly didnt like Carls tone of voice, her distance from him was more due to her self-abandonment than to his behavior. As long as she was being a victim and not taking care of herself in the moment, she was feeling badly. Its easy to blame Carl and think that her feelings are his fault, but her feelings were really the result of not taking loving care of herself around Carl. Marie started to speak up, not blaming Carl but just letting him know her truth. To her great surprise and delight, he finally began to understand what she was saying. He was actually a caring person and just didnt realize that he was being parental and judgmental. The more Marie responded in the moment and spoke her truth, the better things got between them. Carl wasnt perfect, but Marie found that when she spoke up instead of withdrew, they were able to deal with the issue in the moment. She also discovered that the more she took care of herself in the moment instead of being a victim with Carl and with her friends and family - the more respect Carl had for her. Some of his judgment toward her was coming from his frustration over her not speaking up for herself with her family and friends! About The Author

WHAT Dose GSM - Lock & Unlock Mean

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand The term GSM means - Global System for Mobile Communications. It is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. GSM differs significantly from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech channels are Digital call quality, which means that it is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. GSM is an open standard which is currently developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). From the point of view of the consumer, the key advantage of GSM systems has been higher digital voice quality and low cost alternatives to making calls such as text messaging. The advantage for network operators has been the ability to deploy equipment from different vendors because the open standard allows easy inter-operability. Like other cellular standards GSM allows network operators to offer roaming services which mean subscribers can use their phones all over the world. To help you further understand, GSM is simply a standard used by phones to communicate with each other. It is a new standard that has been adopted to all new models of phones and is now so prevailant that it has become the 'norm' in the phone world. Now to answer your other question, with respect to locked and unlocked phones. A phone is locked when it is attached to network. For example if you go to AT&T and purchase a phone from them then that phone is said to be locked unto the AT&T network and as such it cannot work on another network such as SPRINT or NEXTEL. Thus an unlocked phone is a phone that is bought, that is not locked to any network. And as such it can work on any network. The network it will lock unto will depend on the SIM card you put into the phone. For example if you put a AT&T sim in an unlocked phone then it will work on the AT&T network. In the same way if you put a NEXTEL SIM card in an unlocked phone then it will work on the NEXTEL network. However if the phone is locked to a particular network, like say for example AT&T then changing the SIM card in the phone to another SIM card from another network such as NEXTEL will not work. This is because the phone is locked unto to AT&T network and as such will not work on any other network. Yes, you can use the prepaid SIM card on the phone once the phone is either unlocked or on the same network as the SIM card you are going to put into it. It should work just fine. Unfortunatly is isn't possible to have more than one phone on the same line. It is possible to have more to than one phone on the same account, in fact, some providers will allow many many lines on one account. The reason why your unable to do this is that your phone has a ESN (electronic serial number) that assoicated with that line. What this does is allow your network to send the calls to your phone. If there is more then one ESN per line then it will cause problems receiving calls. For example, I had a phone that i wasnt using anymore when i bought a new one, well my old phone was recieving text messages that my new one was supposed to get, but the new one would get all the calls. To resolve the issue that had to erase the programming on the phone. Study Skills

By Sharon White Here is the example of study skills and study techniques difference. One of the study skills is quick and effective remembering of new phenomena. In order to get such skill one should apply study techniques such as improving memory, choosing his/her own technique of remembering (there are four of them: associative, sounding, moving and watching) and monitoring. So in order to get good memorizing skill a student should apply three study techniques. Study skill and study technique can be presented in chain like cause-effect where study technique is a cause whereas study skill is an effect. Cause-effect chain clearly defines the study techniques which are to be applied for each definite study skill. The above listed study techniques can be used for improving memory and developing memorizing skill. However, the above list is very common and each student and teacher should choose or create different memory techniques depending on students’ perception preferences and topics to be learnt. Associative technique for memorizing is the most effective for humanitarian subjects while sounding and watching techniques are better to applied while learning physical, mathematical and other symbols which are difficult to be associated with some pictures or other words. Moving technique for improving memory can be better applied for art classes as it develops good techniques for expressing feelings, thoughts and emotions by body movements. Moving technique for memory can create students good actors! Fast reading and research are the other study skills which have their own techniques as well. For fast reading skill it is useful to apply such techniques as reading a lot and reading aloud. Both techniques can be developed through continuous practice only. Research skills apply numerous study techniques: summarizing, outlining, analysis, comprehension and fast reading, of course! All these techniques have different study methods to develop them. For example, summarizing technique can be developed through brief reviews and short description practice; teachers can ask students to describe briefly some news or events occurred at their homes, country or the world. Here the time limit should be (approx. 5 minutes) after which other students should retell what they have understood while their classmate was briefing. Outlining technique is a vital part of research skill, therefore it must be developed from the very young age. Teachers may ask his/her students to outline each lesson after it finishes and write this down with all corrections and additions which have been made by a teacher and other students. Teachers should help students develop their skills and techniques because class works with other students are easy to comprehend when a group of people with the same interests are striving to achieve the same goal and are willing to help each other. The Best Weight Loss Exercise: Interval Training

By David McCormick If you have read my article called Exercise: Essential, then you can
skip down to the next section, called How to do Interval Training. Read on if you need a reminder of the basic principles of exercise for weight loss. Skip to the bottom to find a link to the whole article on Exercise. Aerobic exercise is fat burning exercise. As you do some activity using large
muscles (legs, especially) that raises your heart rate but still allows you to breathe
normally, your body will burn fat with the oxygen you're breathing. However, your
body will only burn blood-sugar at first, because it's easily available. So, to get to
the fat-burning stage, you have to exercise for at least 20 minutes, preferably 30
minutes or more. Walking and bicycling at a gentle pace are examples of aerobic
activities. Read more in my article on Aerobics. Anaerobic exercises are high-intensity exercises that get your muscles working
hard, and you will have trouble breathing. The word "anaerobic" means "without air",
meaning that you will be breathing fast, but still not getting enough oxygen to
properly fuel your muscles. This leads to muscle strengthening, but it also means
that you're burning blood-sugar only, not fat, and you end up with lactic acid that
will make your muscles feel like they're burning. Weight training and sprinting are
anaerobic activities. You can keep doing aerobic exercise longer than anaerobic exercise, and you'll burn
about equal amounts of calories overall doing either. Aerobic exercise burns those
calories from fat during the exercise. Anaerobic exercise only burns blood-sugar,
but burns a lot of fat later (the rest of the day) to replace the energy. Is it possible to
combine the two, so that you can burn fat while exercising, and keep burning the
rest of the day? Yes, with Interval Training. How to do Interval Training The "intervals" in Interval Training are alternating periods of high-intensity exercise
with low-intensity rest periods. This allows a person to keep exercising for at least
30 minutes to kick in the effects of aerobic activity, but it is also intense enough to
strengthen the heart and provide the long-term fat burning of high-intensity
exercise. The idea is simple, but ingenious, and amazingly effective. You can do interval training using a time-measure or a distance-measure. If you
prefer to run indoors in a gym's track, then there is probably a clock to watch while
running, so time would be more convenient to keep track. If you prefer to train
outdoors, it may be inconvenient to look at your watch every few seconds, so going
by distance will probably be easier. If you use time, you should run as fast as you
can for one full minute, then walk for two minutes. After that, run again for one
more minute and rest by walking for two minutes. Keep repeating this three-minute
cycle until 30 minutes have elapsed overall. If you prefer to chart distance, you will
want to run about a half-mile, then walk for one-quarter mile, and keep alternating
that. Benefits of Interval Training World-class athletes already know that Interval Training is the best way to improve
almost every aspect of running performance. The fist effect is that high-intensity leg
exercise, like running, will make your legs stronger. That means more muscle mass,
and each gram of new muscle will burn that much more fat every minute of every
day. The second effect of high-intensity training is what people call "cardio". That's
short for cardio-vascular training, meaning that your heart as a muscle will grow
stronger. This will prevent many forms of heart disease, as well as improving
circulation, which has benefits for many aspects of life. The most important benefit of Interval Training is that it is the single best way to
improve your VO2-Max. That is the volume (V) of oxygen (O2) that you take with
your deepest breath (max). VO2-max is the best measure of fitness and endurance.
Increasing your VO2-max with interval training will give you greater endurance for
everything you do, and the higher your VO2-max, the less you will feel that heat or
pressure on your lungs when you exercise. Believe me, after interval training for a
week, you will know without a fancy test that your VO2-max is improving, and soon
you'll feel the improvement with every training session. It's a great feeling. Improving Intervals Drink a little water during every rest period. If you forget your water bottle one day,
you will definately notice that you cannot run as fast or as long. The difference is
really remarkable. Using the time method is better than distance to keep yourself honest, because as
you get faster, your half-mile will turn out to take less and less time. So, to keep
improving your performance, and keep losing weight, you should either get a
stopwatch, or else keep making your running intervals farther and farther (to make
sure they still last a whole minute). As your VO2-max increases, you may be tempted to make your workouts last longer
overall, or to make the high-intensity periods last longer. You should do neither of
these things. Your goal should be to keep intervals of 1-minute of running
separated by 2-minutes of walking, and keep increasing the intensity of each
running interval. If you make every interval a sprint for one full minute, and keep
that up for 40 minutes, you are already a superhero. Longer workouts risk
breakdown of tissues and a high burden on your kidneys and other organs. And if
you make each interval longer, you may not be pushing your speed the most you
can, which is where the benefits are. At the other end of the scale, if you're just starting interval training, go easy. Too
many men start off too fast and burn themselves out within 10 minutes. That will
not benefit you. Warm up with a fast walk or a gentle jog for 10 minutes or so.
Then, try your first interval. It should be for one full minute, but just try for a pace a
little faster than a jog. Then walk for two minutes. For your next interval, just try to
maintain that fast jog pace for another full minute. Then walk again for two
minutes. Don't sit down or stop if you can avoid it, keep walking to recover. On your
third interval, try just a little faster. If you can't make it for the full minute, you have
just found out where your zone is. The key isn't to try to sprint right away and only
be able to go for 20 seconds. You have to do the full minute at a constant pace, as
fast as you can sustain for one whole minute. I guarantee that it will be pretty slow
your first time. But try it again the next day, and you will be better. By the end of
two weeks, you'll be amazed how much more fit you've become. I promise. If you don't think you're up for Interval Training yet, read my article on Exercise which you can find on the Mr. Weightless Site. David "Mr. Weightless" McCormick is the founder of Weightless Products, the best

Tips For Productivity

By Bette Daoust, Ph.D. How can print media help with productivity tips? I recently received a business card from a person selling local and long distance telephone services. His card held some really useful information. It held tips on how to answer the phone with courtesy. Instead of throwing his card into my deep pile, I pinned it on my wall with the tips facing me. The card is small enough not to interfere with all other documents I have posted. Using a business card in this manner was an excellent idea; you can expand on this by giving shortcut tips, faster ways to accomplish routine tasks or even a way to improve processes. I often use job-aids for such purposes and really appreciate it when I get some from my suppliers. Another unique item I received from a company called Total Rebound: Total Adventures was a year long calendar that had a peel off back so I could stick it to the bottom of my monitor. I have seen these in other places too, but it is such a short cut and time saver for looking up dates, and it provides me a way to increase productivity. Use your imagination to create information that will help your prospects or customers. Use these aids when networking to create a conversation piece, get people talking. Giving out pointers, tips, shortcuts, etc., is just another way to catch the attention of potential customers. It gives you (and them) an excuse to talk about what you do. Once the conversation is open, take time to set a first meeting and find out more. Bette Daoust, Ph.D. has been networking with others since leaving high school years ago. Realizing that no one really cared about what she did in life unless she had someone to tell and excite. She decided to find the best ways to get peoples attention, be creative in how she presented herself and products, getting people to know who she was, and being visible all the time. Her friends and colleagues have often dubbed her the Networking Queen. Blueprints for Success - Networking: 150 ways to promote yourself is the first in this series. Blueprints for Success Branding Yourself: Another 150 ways to promote yourself is planned for release in 2006. Look for the Signs! Signs of Depression

By Carl English For going on twenty years, I showed strongly, felt deeply, questioned, and tried to investigate what I didnt realize were what about 15 million people go through every year: the signs of depression that have now been researched, therapeutically investigated, and now have successful depression treatment. Before I realised that ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) was the heaviness weighing me down exponentially every day, along with the symptoms of depression, I had a hell of a time staying on focused on the now in the real world. I was dragging my (emotionally and physically) corpse out of bed, where I wouldve rathered stay. Finding it futile to make my bed, as I would just be climbing into it again. I found most outings and daily activitiesthose that used to inspire medull, useless and dead boring! Definite depression signs. I was moany and bitchy. Sometimes, more than a few times actually, I would reach the point of crying. In fact I reached the stage that I would cry at least every day, and even every hour!
The symptoms of depression became overwhelming and unbearable. I would look in the mirror to maybe have a shave, and would hear the cold voices in my head, almost very confidently, straight to the point say, Well, you may as well do yourself in now, kill yourself, what else is left. My manic depressive life was saying to me death was the ONLY option and solution available. I had battled for years to exercise by powerwalking 5 miles a day; write, journal, help others, pray, meet people, diet, sleep it off, burn it off by not sleeping, go to twelve step programs, and visit a counselor or therapist. One of the first therapists, a brilliant doctor who volunteered at a clinic in the country, told me that while I pontificated over being clean and sober and not being medicated, I was like the person who walked through a rough part of town at three a.m., got stabbed, and stood there philosophizing about whether or not to get medical help. He said, You have a hole in your heart; we need to fix it. He prescribed Prozac. Carl English's Pen name is Dr. Happiness. He has been through the depths of Depression and now dedicates his time to helping others. For the rest of this article and plenty more stop by and Smile (if you can manage) to Signs of Depression.
